The Henge
The Henge opened its doors on January 8, 1955, at 26 Company Street in Christiansted. The restaurant was owned by Victor Gilbert, also known as “Skinker” – an old English term referring to someone who serves or pours liquor. Gilbert, a classically trained chef, previously owned a restaurant called Stonehenge in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and had worked at some of Europe’s finest hotels and restaurants.
Known for its upscale dining, The Henge offered both lunch and dinner, with live piano music played every evening, adding to its elegant atmosphere.
In 1957, the restaurant was taken over by Henri and Lori Gonin, a French couple. The following year, in January 1958, the Gonins expanded the venture by opening the Moulin Rouge Casino, which operated alongside the restaurant.
Sadly, in 1959, The Henge suffered a devastating fire. At the time of the fire, Charles Pettit was the head chef, overseeing the kitchen’s operations.
