Scientific name: Schefflera actinophylla
Common names: Australia Umbrella Tree, Queensland Umbrella Tree, Octopus Tree, Umbrella Plant
Schefflera actinophylla, commonly known as the Australian Umbrella Tree, is a stunning and versatile plant renowned for its large, umbrella-like leaves. Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and nearby islands, this plant is highly valued for its striking appearance and ease of care. It thrives both indoors and outdoors in suitable climates, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. With proper attention to pruning, watering, and lighting, it can flourish while avoiding common issues like pests and leaf drop.
The plant’s large, glossy, leathery leaves are arranged in a distinctive, palmate formation, with 7 to 16 leaflets radiating from a central point. This unique arrangement creates the characteristic umbrella-like canopy that makes the Schefflera actinophylla so visually appealing.
In its native habitat, the Australian Umbrella Tree can grow into a sizable tree, reaching heights of 10 to 15 meters (32 to 49 feet). When cultivated as an indoor plant, however, it remains more compact, typically growing to around 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet) tall.
This plant also produces long, drooping clusters of small reddish or pinkish flowers, which, while not particularly showy, are a magnet for birds and pollinators in the wild. Its fruit consists of small, dark purple to black berries containing seeds, adding further interest to this remarkable species.
